Gold Purity: What to Check in BIS Hallmark to Avoid Fraud

Gold Purity: What to Check in BIS Hallmark to Avoid Fraud

Gold Purity:
Gold is one of the most precious metals in the world. People in India buy gold not only for beauty but also as a long-term investment. Because the price of gold keeps increasing, it is very important to check the purity before buying. Many people fall for fraud because they do not know how to identify real, pure gold.

Gold Purity:

Gold purity is measured in carats. Carat means how much pure gold is present in the item. Gold is available mainly in 24K, 22K, 20K, 18K, and 14K. As the carat number becomes higher, the purity also becomes higher.

24K gold is the purest form with 99.9% purity. It looks very bright and has a deep yellow color. But because it is soft, it cannot be used to make jewellery. Pure 24K gold bends easily, so it is mostly used for gold bars and investments.

22K gold has 91.67% pure gold, and the remaining portion contains metals like copper or zinc. This is also called 916 gold. Because it is stronger than 24K gold, most jewellery in India is made using 22K gold.

20K gold has about 83.33% pure gold, and the rest is a mix of other metals.
18K gold contains 75% gold. It is commonly used for modern jewellery designs.
14K gold contains 58.3% gold, and it is more durable and cheaper compared to 18K.

The most important thing to check while buying gold is the BIS Hallmark. BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certifies the purity of gold jewellery in India. A genuine BIS hallmark includes:

The triangular BIS logo,
The carat value such as 22K or 18K,
A unique identification number.

If these marks are present, the jewellery is verified and safe to buy. If they are missing, there is a higher chance of fraud.

Today, as gold rates continue to rise, checking purity has become even more important. Before buying gold, make sure you look for the BIS hallmark so that your money is safe and you get real, pure gold.
