Indian Railways:
Every day, millions of people travel by train across India. Some journeys are short, while others take many hours or even days. During long-distance travel, passengers may sometimes feel unwell due to tiredness, dehydration, stress or sudden medical issues. In such situations by knowing the right steps can help save time and even lives.
If you develop a health problem while traveling on a train, the first and most important thing is not to panic. Inform the Train Ticket Examiner (TTE) or any railway staff immediately about your condition. Explain your symptoms clearly so they can understand the seriousness of the situation. The railway staff will guide you and take quick action.
If the train is about to reach a station, the station superintendent can arrange medical help. Indian Railways has a system to provide first aid and basic medical assistance at many stations. Railway doctors or paramedical staff can examine the passenger and give necessary treatment. If the condition is serious, the passenger may be shifted to the nearest hospital for further care.
In case of emergency, passengers can call the railway helpline number 138. This number connects you to railway authorities who can coordinate with medical teams and station officials. Immediate help will be arranged based on the nature of the problem. Passengers can also use the emergency alarm chain to alert the driver if the situation is extremely critical.
For minor problems such as headache, fever, nausea, or weakness, first aid can be given on the train itself. The railway staff may also guide you on basic precautions until proper medical help arrives. In many cases, medical teams are informed in advance to be present at the next station.
If the passenger needs to stop the journey due to severe illness, the railway administration supports the process and helps with moving the person safely to a hospital. The safety and health of passengers are taken seriously, and systems are in place to handle such emergencies.
Indian Railways also provides facilities like cloakrooms and lockers at major stations, where passengers can safely store their luggage if they need to leave the train for medical treatment.
