In this Island Time Does Not Exist and People Sleep Anytime

Most places in the world follow a regular schedule based on time. People wake up, work, eat, and sleep according to clocks. However, there is one place on Earth where time seems meaningless. This unusual place is Sommarøy, a small island north of the Arctic Circle. The island is famous for fishing and its rare natural conditions.

An Island With Only 300 Residents

Sommarøy has a very small population of about 300 people. These residents live a lifestyle that feels completely different from the rest of the world. Their way of living surprises many visitors who hear about it. The island’s strange daylight cycle shapes everything in their daily lives.

Sunlight Stays for Weeks Without Setting

Continuous Daylight in the North means that for approximately 69 days between May 20 and July 18, there will be no sunset. This occurrence is often referred to as “Midnight Sun”. Because of it, the island will not experience the separation of day and night as we would normally expect it.

Daily Life Without a Sense of Time

Inhabitants of Iceland have adapted to this constant sunlight by not adhering to schedules for their daily routines. They eat when they are hungry, sleep when they are tired, and are not subject to the constraints of using a clock to dictate their decisions or activities.

Unusual Activities at Odd Hours

The inhabitants participate in many sporting events, such as “Soccer” matches, at strange times of day (i.e. 2:00 a.m. or 3:00 a.m.). However, since it is still incredibly light outside during these times due to the Midnight Sun, it feels almost like daytime to them. They will often get out of bed at any given time of day and immediately go out to fish. They therefore conduct many of their leisure activities outside of traditional hours for most people.

Shops Follow Their Own Timing

Additionally, there are no set hours for opening or closing shops. The shop owner will decide when to open/close their business. This relaxed way of life is well-suited to the island’s natural environment. It allows for complete freedom to decide when and how a person will conduct their business.

Residents Do Not Depend on Clocks

Typical Sommarøy residents do not rely on a clock for their schedule; rather, they rely on their own bodies’ natural signals (hunger, fatigue) to determine when to eat and when to rest, regardless of what time their clocks say.

Tourists Still Follow Time

Sommarøy tourists, however, continue to be dependent on the clock to determine when they should eat, as well as how much time and energy they have available during their time in Sommarøy.

A Lifestyle Shaped by Nature

Due to the extreme nature of their environment, Sommarøy residents enjoy a lifestyle created by the environment and are influenced by the sun and its relationship to the people living in Sommarøy. The residents of Sommarøy do not live by a schedule and instead enjoy a more free-spirited life.
