Cyclone Ditwah Red Alert: What’s Open and What’s Closed in Chennai?

Cyclone Ditwah Red Alert: According to the India Meteorological Department, as this year’s cyclone Ditwah intensifies over the Bay of Bengal, a red alert has been issued for Chennai regarding heavy rainfall, gusty winds, and coastal flooding at possible places. In light of forecasts projecting the cyclone’s move closer to Tamil Nadu’s shores, emergency preparations have begun in the city, and authorities have announced different closures and restrictions intended for public safety.

Education: Schools and Colleges Closed

In light of the adverse weather predictions, the Tamil Nadu government has declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and the district of Tiruvallur. Examinations have been postponed, and institutions have been advised to conduct online classes if that is applicable. Hostels have also been told to prepare sufficient food, water, and backup power supplies for students on campus.

Government and Private Offices: Partial Closure

Disaster management government departments will provide health and essential services. Other state offices have advised work-from-home options for the time. Many private companies operating in the IT corridor and central business zones had also switched to remote working to avoid employee travel during high-risk hours.

Transport: What’s Functional and What’s Suspended

Reduced frequency for metro rail services only operational for suburban trains; functionality remains intact but with delays associated with informing passengers.
The Chennai airport has warned all the passengers that arrivals and departures will be delayed at some time due to the wind conditions and advised them to check their flight status.
Temporarily diverted bus routes in vulnerable coastal pockets where fishermen have been strictly warned not to set sail into the sea.

While essential services-the hospitals, pharmacies, and supermarkets-remain open, malls, beach-view food stalls, parks, and tourist spots remain closed for the time being.
Residents are strongly advised to stay indoors, avoid low-lying areas and store emergency supplies.

Preparedness is Key.

As Cyclone Ditwah threatens to bring torrential rain and gusty winds to water the southern coastal city, Chennai authorities are intensifying calls for cooperation with safety measures. Timely closure and preventive measures are expected to minimize risks as the city prepares for the oncoming cyclone.
