Chennai 7-Day Forecast: Chennai is gearing up once again for yet another bout of heavy rain, as Cyclone Ditwah is getting stronger in the southwest Bay of Bengal. The Indian Meteorological Department has issued an orange alert for the city, while the neighboring districts Chengalpattu and Kancheepuram were put under a red alert. Officials have urged residents to remain indoors and limit travel and avoid coastal areas as there are expectations that conditions may further deteriorate rapidly in the next 48 hours.
As of 28 November 2025, Cyclone Ditwah was located at some 450 km south of Chennai and moving north-northwest at a slow pace of around 7 km/h. The system, at present brushing past the Sri Lankan coastline, is expected to acquire additional strength before making an advance towards the north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry belt in the early hours of 30 November. IMD models indicate that the cyclone’s outer rain bands will influence Chennai well before it makes landfall.
From the 29th of November, heavy rainfall will characterize the city at widespread levels and will be followed by frequent thunderstorms, lightnings, and gusts of wind; the cyclone is expected to cross north Tamil Nadu-Puducherry at the early morning hours of the 30th of November, interacting with the ongoing northeast monsoon throughout the week and raising the chance of waterlogging and traffic disruption.

1 December: Partly cloudy with light to moderate rain, isolated thunderstorms can be expected.
2 December: Cloudy with light to scattered showers.

4 December: Cloudy, with light rain; gradual improvement.
5 December: Light, passing showers under cloudy skies.
Teams of NDRF were mobilized at vulnerable zones across Tamil Nadu for evacuation and emergency response. Local officials also monitor reservoirs, drainage systems, and low-lying areas to avoid flooding. Residents are advised to keep checking the official weather bulletins so that they can follow safety instructions without delay.
