Solar Manufacturing in India: PLI Scheme Creates 43,000 Jobs

Solar Manufacturing in India:

India’s Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme is creating strong growth in the solar manufacturing sector. This central government programme was launched to encourage the production of high-efficiency solar PV modules within the country. According to data shared in the Lok Sabha, the scheme has already created around 43,000 jobs by October 2025. Out of these, 11,220 are direct jobs, while the rest are indirect jobs generated across different states.

Solar Manufacturing in India:

Under this scheme, solar manufacturing units have been set up in many regions such as Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, and Odisha. Gujarat is the largest beneficiary. Major companies like Reliance Industries and Adani New Industries have established large-scale projects there, which together created more than 22,400 jobs.

Tamil Nadu stands in second place with nearly 6,800 jobs, supported by companies such as FS India Solar Ventures, VSL Green Power, and TP Solar. Andhra Pradesh has generated about 1,620 jobs, while Odisha added around 200 jobs through AMPIN Solar. Companies like ReNew Photovoltaics, Grew Energy, and Avada Electro are also contributing to job creation through their ongoing projects across multiple states.

The government is implementing the PLI scheme with a budget of ₹24,000 crore. So far, the scheme has approved solar module manufacturing units with a combined capacity of 48.3 GW, either fully or partially integrated. According to the recently updated Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM), India’s total installed solar module manufacturing capacity has touched 121.68 GW.

Even as domestic manufacturing grows, India continues to import some modules. During the first half of 2025–26, the country imported 18.058 million solar modules, worth around 386 million dollars.

The PLI scheme is now seen as a major step towards making India a global solar manufacturing hub. It is helping increase production, create employment, and reduce dependency on imports. With more units coming up, the sector is expected to expand further in the coming years.
