With the proposed acquisition of legendary Hollywood studio Warner Bros. (Warner Bros. Discovery) being lined up, Netflix is poised to create huge waves in the global entertainment landscape. Under the agreement, Warner Bros. film and television studios and channels will be put in the kitty of the streaming giant, with HBO and HBO Max as notable mentions. The deal has been placed at an eye-popping $82.7 billion (₹7.5 lakh crore) in cash and stocks.
Should this deal consummate by the middle of next year, Netflix will possess one of the most prestigious content libraries laden with global TV franchises such as The Big Bang Theory, The Sopranos, and the worldwide phenomenon Game of Thrones. Timeless classic films such as The Wizard of Oz are also included in the Warner Bros. list, and they will soon find themselves covered by Netflix.
According to the comments made by Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos, an acquisition of this nature is a gargantuan injection to the creative ambitions of the corporation. “Our mission has always been to entertain the world,” he said. “The Warner Bros. library-from timeless classics like Casablanca and Citizen Kane to modern favorites like Harry Potter and Friends-will only augment what we already offer with Stranger Things, Demon Hunters, Squid Game, and such. Together, we can better serve audiences and help shape the storytelling of the next century.”
As part of the deal, shareholders of Warner Bros. Discovery will get $27.75 for each share. Once finalized, the acquisition will go a long way in strengthening Netflix’s position in the global entertainment hierarchy.
In tandem with the acquisition, Netflix is constructing a $350 million production complex in New Jersey, which signifies the beginning of a new phase of large-scale growth for the company. The construction of the studio campus is already underway, marking Netflix’s long-term commitment to building out its production capabilities.
