Woman Dies of Scrub Typhus in AP, Another Case Reported

Scrub Typhus Alert in Andhra Pradesh:

A fresh health warning has come from Andhra Pradesh as scrub typhus cases are rising in the Prakasam district. A 61-year-old woman from Erragondapalem village lost her life while undergoing treatment at Guntur GGH. This is the first confirmed death due to scrub typhus in the district this year, creating fear among local people.

The woman, identified as P. Danamma, worked as a cook at a government high school in Vaipalem. She fell sick on November 16 and took local treatment for two days. As her condition did not improve, her family shifted her to Guntur Government General Hospital on November 18. Doctors later confirmed through medical tests on November 29 that she was suffering from Scrub Typhus. Despite continuous treatment, she passed away early Saturday morning.

Health officials have also confirmed another suspected case in Darsi. A man who came with fever and weakness was tested, and doctors suspected scrub typhus infection. His blood samples were sent to Ongole RIMS for final confirmation. District medical authorities are closely monitoring the situation.

Scrub typhus is a serious bacterial infection spread through the bite of infected mites found in bushes and grassy areas. The common symptoms include high fever, body pain, headache, skin rashes, and swelling of lymph nodes. If not treated early, the disease can become life-threatening.

Doctors are advising people to be extra careful during the rainy and post-monsoon seasons. People living in rural areas should keep their surroundings clean, wear full-length clothing while working in fields, and seek medical help immediately if they develop high fever that does not come down within two days.

District health officials are also planning awareness programs in villages to educate people about the disease, its symptoms, and early treatment. Free testing and medicines are being provided at government hospitals.

The recent death has made villagers alert, and many are now rushing to hospitals for check-ups. Health authorities have urged people not to panic but stay cautious, as early diagnosis can completely cure scrub typhus.
