Dileep Case Verdict: If Dileep gets convicted by the courts for any of the worst acts by any means, as applicable under the Indian penal system, he would receive the maximum punishment possible. Life imprisonment is prescribed for the crime under section 376D dealing with punishment for gang rape; legal experts suggest that a convict should be made to serve at least 14 years in jail before coming up for release. This is the maximum punishment against him under the penal code; it quite drastically turns around the life of either the convict involved, personally or professionally. By now, it would have been the most dreaded incident, having far-reaching consequences legally and socially.
In other words, the court may hold that Dileep assisted the planning of some elements of the crime but was not criminally liable for the sexual assault. Charges would only be entertained under conspiracy to commit a crime, kidnapping, or abduction with incitement or shelter of offenders at the site of the offence.
The penalty for conspiracy varies according to the seriousness of the intended crime, up to ten years maximum. The same applies for felonious intent abduction punishable under Section 366. All these minor charges, depending on the order of the court for concurrent or consecutive sentences, may result in a sentence ranging from 7 to 14 years.
The third and least likely probability is Conviction on minor charges like harboring an offender or tampering with evidence. Prison sentences awarded for these violations are generally lesser. Depending on the gravity determined in court, it might last for anything between two and seven years. Evidence-tampering per se cases do sometimes result in background sentences of up to about three years.
Dileep would face life imprisonment with a minimum of 14 years in prison before being eligible for release, assuming he were found guilty of the serious charges today.
