Several states across India have declared school holidays on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, due to bad weather, elections, and special regional events. The main aim of these closures is to keep students safe and avoid travel problems during risky conditions. Parents are advised to stay alert and follow updates shared by district officials and school management.

In Jammu & Kashmir, a severe cold wave has forced the government to shut schools in winter zones for an entire week. Schools in hilly areas will remain closed from December 8 to December 14 due to freezing temperatures, dense fog, and early snowfall. For younger children from pre-primary to Class 8, schools will stay closed for the full month of December to protect them from the harsh winter.

In Kerala, schools will remain closed on December 9 and December 11 because of the two-phase local body elections. Schools are being used as polling stations and for election arrangements. Districts like Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kozhikode, and Kannur are included in the holiday list.

Bad weather has also affected southern India. Heavy rain caused by Cyclone Ditwah has led to school closures in parts of Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and coastal Andhra Pradesh. Cities like Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, and Tiruvallur remain on high alert. According to India Meteorological Department, light to moderate rain may continue for the next two days. Because of waterlogging and unsafe roads, many districts have already announced holidays, especially for Classes 1 to 8.

In Maharashtra, schools are facing disruption due to a statewide teachers’ and staff strike. Nearly 18,000 schools are affected, mostly in the Marathwada region. Many schools are running with very few teachers, while some remain fully closed.

Meanwhile, Meghalaya has declared a full school holiday on December 12 to observe the death anniversary of Pa Togan Nengminja Sangma, a respected freedom fighter.

With weather changes, elections, and public events happening in many regions, students and parents are strongly advised to check official district notices daily for the latest updates.
