Why Heart Attack Cases Rise in Winter: Four Key Factors

Heart Attack Cases: With the rapidly escalating heart attack fatality rates, it is one of the leading causes of death at present. Cardiovascular diseases topped the list of causes of deaths due to the reported 19.8 million fatalities in 2022 by the World Health Organization. Of the fatalities, heart diseases and stroke accounted for nearly 85%.

Indeed, many things can disrupt blood flow, but more often than not, blockage in one or more of the coronary arteries is the most common reason for an interruption in blood flow. As stated by The Cleveland Clinic, irreversible damage may occur if blood flow is not restored in the shortest possible time, and death may ensue.

What starts heart attacks in winter?

Research indicates a latent fact that heart attack cases surge in winter. It has environmental and lifestyle stresses suiting the season that lay upon the heart, and that are said to be the most common during that season. According to Pune-based cardiologist Dr Abhijeet Khadtare from Ruby Hall, the low temperature and all seasonal events have an impact on the cardiovascular system.

There are four main reasons that could explain the increase.

1) Vasoconstriction as well as Increased Blood Pressure

When cold conditions develop, it causes vasoconstriction, which is the state of the arteries narrowing to prevent heat loss from the body. Such constriction raises blood pressure, thereby increasing the workload on the heart. The extra work burden that this brings could be just the last straw pushing people with a narrowed pathway in their blocked arteries or those with heart defects into having their heart attack. In addition, during the winter, blood becomes viscous and heavier than before, increasing chances of clotting.

2) Bad eating habits and decreased exercise

Increased weight due to less physical exercise in winter is associated with poor circulation and bad lipid levels. Just like that, diets during winters which usually consist of salt, sugar, and fat in all forms damage good diets and cause an immediately raised blood pressure and cholesterol, thereafter causing a heart attack.

3) Increasing Cases of Respiratory Diseases

At the beginning of yet another winter is often conjoined with a sudden increase in respiratory diseases and flu; these specific diseases are inflammation in the body, which could destabilize plaques in the arteries, creating means by which those plaques could be blocked, leading to heart attacks.

4) Hormonal Effects and Seasonal Stress

With changes in lifestyle, especially in winter when sunlight is less, the amount of stress increases. More stress hormones like cortisol and epinephrine are released, which increase both heart rate and blood pressure and put a great load on the heart.
