Irrfan Khan: Of all the actors who made their mark in Indian Cinema, none made quite the imprint on the viewer as did Irrfan Khan. As recently as 3 years ago, film enthusiasts and critics discussed whether or not Irrfan merited the title of ‘best actor’ in his generation-a fact attesting to his prowess as a performer whose spectrum of artistry is not easily contained within genres, languages, or types of filmmaking.
Perhaps a crowning glory of Irrfan Khan’s almost natural artistry is the ability with which he had borne each role without effort. Within a taut thriller, quiet drama, even an international production, audiences often lost the sense of fiction and were swept along in the reality of the cinematic storytelling-that much people shared with the saying, “he made acting so natural and easy,” clearly in voices many, many. From May have been The Lunchbox, pass something as indubitably understated as it is into the depths of tragic tear-jerking moments as witnessed in Paan Singh Tomar, Irrfan command technique that very few could even start to approach.
Now, when everyone is trying to steal the attention in defining thought of the greatest names associated to Hindi cinema, Irrfan’s name tags along the likes of Amitabh Bachchan, Naseeruddin Shah, Nana Patekar, and Sanjeev Kumar. Now, as cinephiles say, Irrfan came quite a little later: early 2000s; however, even for the limited timeline of around 20 years, he had already built a very robust filmography to be on the, so to say, list. Some even added that in the past quarter century, one of the scant performances worth mentioning alongside Irrfan has been by Bachchan, Nana Patekar, and Kay Kay Menon.
The most mournful element of Irrfan Khan’s legacy was that tragic before and after. There, indeed, was so much more to give. As one fan remarked, “He was so far above everyone else, and we lost him too soon.” The sudden passing of Irrfan Khan in 2020 left a void in the Indian film landscape.
