Kareena Kapoor has hit the headlines recently when, during her interview with Gillian Anderson, she said, “I have never done intimate scenes.” Confusion reigned in the hearts of fans, considering that the actress has had more than a handful of films with romantic or even sensual moments — from Kurbaan and Heroine to Omkara and Ki & Ka. Many started asking the reason, why would Kareena make statements like that?
Social media users took no time to call out the disconnect. Some called the statement hypocritical, adding that Kareena likes to portray a “royal, elite” picture. Several pointed out how her personality seems to change shape with her relationships, first headlining the Shahid Kapoor energy and later evolving to the Saif Ali Khan aristocratic demeanor.
A few linked this to a colonial past of the Pataudi family, saying it reflects her love for British culture and that she tends to be “holier-than-thou” in interviews.
Others defended Kareena, however, saying she might not have been exactly dishonest. They explained that what Bollywood calls an “intimate scene” is far more contained compared to Hollywood. They added that intimacy in Indian Cinema usually lies with a kiss or suggestive moments but is mostly in nudity and realism in Hollywood. This way, Kareena’s statement could be a means to distinguish the two styles.
However, knowingly or not, Kareena reopened debate on hypocrisy and double standards in Bollywood. She is certainly not alone in viewing herself as a good publicity magnet-how or who people think of her dependent on whether she is seen to be putting on a cultured, classy front or dismissive of her past work. Whether that was worse than double deflection or cultural misinterpretation, it proved at least one thing: Kareena Kapoor knows how to get people talking.
