RBI Brings Big Relief for Zero Balance Account Holders

RBI Brings Big Relief for Zero Balance Account Holders

Zero Balance Account Holders:
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced several important changes for customers who use Basic Savings Bank Deposit (BSBD) accounts, also known as zero-balance accounts. These changes aim to make banking easier and more helpful for people who cannot maintain a minimum balance. With the new rules, customers will get more free services, fewer charges, and better access to digital banking.

Zero Balance Account Holders:

One of the biggest changes is that RBI now allows unlimited monthly deposits in BSBD accounts. Earlier, some banks had limits, which caused inconvenience for customers who receive frequent small payments. From now on, customers can deposit money any number of times without any fee.

RBI also said that banks must provide free ATM or debit card usage and at least 25 pages of a free cheque book every year. Banks cannot charge any renewal fee for ATM or debit cards. Along with this, customers will get free internet banking, mobile banking, a passbook, or a monthly statement.

For withdrawals, banks now need to allow a minimum of four free withdrawals per month, including withdrawals from home-branch ATMs and other bank ATMs. Digital payments like UPI, IMPS, NEFT, and RTGS will not be counted as withdrawals. This means customers can use digital banking without worrying about charges or limits.

If someone has a regular savings account but no other bank account, they can also change it to a BSBD account if they prefer these benefits. These new rules apply to all banks rural banks, cooperative banks, local area banks, small finance banks, payment banks, and commercial banks.

These changes will officially come into effect from April 1, 2026, but banks have the option to start them earlier if they wish. RBI says the purpose of the new rules is to strengthen BSBD accounts and ensure that basic banking services are available to everyone in a fair and simple manner.

With these updates, millions of zero-balance account holders will enjoy more freedom, better services, and a hassle-free banking experience.
