Filmmaker Aanand L Rai and actor Dhanush are exploring legal action over the unauthorized AI-altered version of their 2013 film Raanjhanaa. The new version, which features a happy ending instead of the original, has caused an uproar. Rai expressed his concerns, calling the modification a “dangerous precedent” that threatens creative ownership in the film industry.
In a statement, Rai revealed his worries about the future of his films. “We are actively looking at judicial remedies to preserve our creative content,” he said. Dhanush, who starred in the film, echoed these sentiments on social media, stating that the altered ending stripped the film of its “very soul.”
The AI-generated climax, which was added to the Tamil version of Raanjhanaa (released as Ambikapathy), presents an ending drastically different from the original. This modification, made by the rights holder Eros International, was re-released without the filmmakers’ consent on August 1, sparking outrage.
Rai had previously expressed his shock and disappointment in an Instagram post. “To watch Raanjhanaa, a film born out of care, be altered and re-released without my knowledge or consent has been devastating,” he wrote. His message emphasized how easily the changes were made and how it undermines the integrity of the work.
As the controversy intensifies, both Rai and Dhanush remain firm in their resolve to take legal action. They argue that such AI interventions, if left unchecked, could set a troubling precedent, damaging the authenticity and ownership of creative projects in the future.

Amid the ongoing row, actor Farhan Akhtar has also voiced his support for Rai and Dhanush. Akhtar, in a recent statement, expressed his loyalty to the creators, stating, “My loyalty lies with the creator.” He emphasized that the original vision of the filmmakers should be respected, further backing the call for legal action against unauthorized alterations.
