AIR Caste Controversy: Is Creative Freedom of Filmmakers at Risk?

The recently released web series AIR (All India Rankers, in Telugu) on ETV Win is sure to raise hackles after it included a scene. AIR Caste Controversy which a particular caste student counsels his juniors to stick together for successful completion. Along with a “C” motif in the background widely interpreted as caste symbolism.

AIR Caste Controversy:

Immediately, the ETV Win management took action and removed the impugned clip. As per Sai Krishna Koinni, the head of ETV Win, on X:

”At Ramoji Group, we are committed to respect everyone’s sentiments and avoid causing any offense. All objectionable scenes have been clipped from the AIR web series.”

Actor-director Sandeep Raj, who is a part of the series and presented it, apologized openly:

“WE REMOVED THAT ONE DISASTER SCENE.”

Everyone makes mistakes as they’re starting their careers. We did, too, but immediately rectified it.” It’s not like we’re planning to repeat it the rest of our lives.

AIR is created from a passion, with many young talents having their careers as stakes. Instead, we want it remembered for its drama, emotions, and freshness; not with the one bad scene that puts us in this bad light.”

Assuring you guys I will be more responsible while making content from now on. Yes did disturb your minds during this beautiful weekend. Will compensate this mishap very soon with beautiful content to cool down your anger on me and my team.”

Scriptwriter Nithik Chakravarthy, who sought to clarify the intent of the show, said, “The series actually portrays real campus realities, especially in Vijayawada and Guntur during the 1990s, where sadly, caste-based groupism was common.” He reiterated that there was no agenda to vilify any caste.

Creative Freedom of Filmmakers at Risk:

Proponents have it that, however uncomfortable, a portrayal of a particular caste dynamics is the least one can do to create a realistic depiction of societal challenges that ought to be put on the table for discussion.

Opponents, however, argue that by bowing to public pressure on editing content, platforms set a precedent through which one can successfully argue that a creative work may be censored even without the compulsion of law.
