Alice in Borderland 3: When Alice in Borderland first aired, it was among one of the best of Netflix’s original Japanese dramas due to the brilliant writing, enticing characters, and methodical survival games. In Seasons 1 and 2, the storyline centered around themes of friendship, sacrifice, and the cost of survival, but Season 3, unfortunately, extends a completed story while trading quality for spectacle, which left longtime viewers disappointed.
Usagi’s arc was one of the weakest parts of the season. She longed to leave the Borderlands in earlier seasons, yet suddenly returns in Season 3. Her reasoning-connected to her father’s death-wasn’t convincing, especially since her “realization” that people should move on could have happened without dragging her back. It felt like forced drama, not authentic character growth.
Banda’s sudden rise in authority lacked logic. He was just another player before, yet Season 3 treated him like a central villain. His motives were flimsy, and his attempts to lure Arisu into staying ignored everything Arisu had already learned. Similarly, Ryuji was written as a contradiction-developing one minute, regressing the next. His obsession with Usagi and inconsistent choices made his death emotionally flat.
The season relied far too much on background stories of characters nobody cared about. Those lore dumps dragged down the pacing and drew away from the main plot. In the meantime, original fan favorites like Chishiya, Kuina, and Aguni weren’t there to fill the void of the new cast. The original trio carried much of the heart of the show, and without them the emotional weight of the conclusion was lost.
The Joker’s final confrontation with Arisu should have been monumental. Instead, it rang hollow. Arisu had already built a future with Usagi, so the Joker’s attempt to tempt him into self-sacrifice felt disconnected from his current journey. The stakes were nonexistent.
Long, dragged-out sequences and clumsy subplots gave the impression of a show stretched for profit. What once felt sharp and purposeful now seemed like filler, maybe even setup for a remake nobody asked for.
