Cate Blanchett recently opened up about her surprise cameo in the final episode of Squid Game Season 3, calling it “one of the most mysterious jobs” she has ever done. The surprise appearance shows her as an American recruiter playing ddakji in a back alley. The character briefly locks eyes with the series ‘Front Man’.
Blanchett said the offer came unexpectedly. She joined the production with little context. “It came out of the blue,” she told Variety. The team kept the shoot under tight secrecy. The team gave her only a few storyboards and a basic breakdown of what they expected from each shot.
To prepare for the scene, Blanchett had to learn ddakji, the traditional Korean game featured in the series. She described the process as intense but brief. “I had to practice and practice,” she said. The team walked her through four or five specific setups. She focused on delivering exactly what they needed. Despite the simplicity of the scene, she said it stood out from anything she had done before. “It was one of the more mysterious jobs,” she added.
When asked if she would join an American version of Squid Game, Blanchett said she would consider it. “I am wildly open to anything,” she said. She praised the original series for its world-building and global appeal. She added, “That series has been eaten alive. I don’t think there’s a corner of the globe that it hasn’t touched in some way.”

Reports suggest David Fincher may direct the American adaptation. Blanchett said she knows nothing about the project. “I’m not being coy. I really don’t,” she stated. However, she expressed interest in working with Fincher again. The two previously collaborated on The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. “I’d love to work with David again. It’s been ages,” she said.
