His real name is Shivaji Rao Gaekwad, born on December 12, 1950. Director K. Balachander was responsible for giving him the screen name “Rajinikanth,” based on a character in one of his former films. Shivaji maintains that Balachander is his godfather in the film industry.
Rajinikanth was a bus conductor in the Bangalore Transport Service before going into films. Even at this time, he had that style in how he would issue tickets and entertain passengers, something that fell right into his unique charisma on screen.
Rajinikanth debuted in Tamil cinema in the 1975 production Apoorva Raagangal by portraying a negative character. Interestingly, he played villainous roles in many early films before becoming the quintessential hero.
Though celebrated as a Tamil superstar, Rajinikanth has acted in movies in Kannada, Telugu, Hindi, Malayalam, and Bengali. His appeal across India was firmly entrenched before the phrase “Pan-India star” was even coined.
