Hansal Mehta’s upcoming series Gandhi, starring Pratik Gandhi, will have its world premiere at the 50th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in 2025. The series marks a historic moment as the first Indian show ever selected for TIFF’s prestigious Primetime slate.
TIFF 2025 runs from September 4 to 14.
Mehta shared the first look on X, revealing Pratik Gandhi as Mahatma Gandhi, standing in front of a crowd of men dressed in white. In his post, Mehta called the moment “a quiet revolution” and wrote, “Gandhi steps onto the world stage… a story at once deeply personal and profoundly universal.” He described the series as an “audacious dream” brought to life through belief and perseverance.
Oscar-winner A.R. Rahman is composing the music for the series. He also shared the TIFF announcement on X, calling it a proud moment. The show is produced by Applause Entertainment and based on Ramachandra Guha’s acclaimed biographies Gandhi Before India and Gandhi: The Years That Changed the World. Bhamini Oza plays Kasturba Gandhi in the series.
Gandhi marks the second major collaboration between Hansal Mehta and Pratik Gandhi after the massive success of Scam 1992. That show turned Pratik into a breakout star and cemented Mehta’s place as one of India’s boldest storytellers. Now, with Gandhi, the duo aims for a global impact.
