HBO officially began production of its highly anticipated Harry Potter TV series on Monday and unveiled the first glimpse of the title character. The new image shows Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, dressed in the iconic Hogwarts uniform, round-rimmed glasses, and lightning bolt scar, closely resembling Daniel Radcliffe’s look from the original film series.

Production is underway at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the United Kingdom, with the series expected to premiere in 2027. Alongside the production update, HBO also revealed new cast members. Rory Wilmot will play Neville Longbottom, Amos Kitson takes on the role of Dudley Dursley, Louise Brealey joins as Madam Rolanda Hooch, and Anton Lesser will portray Garrick Ollivander.

In an earlier announcement made in late May, the network confirmed Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, and Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger. The series has also cast several well-known actors in key roles. Katherine Parkinson will play Molly Weasley, John Lithgow joins as Albus Dumbledore, and Paapa Essiedu takes on the role of Severus Snape. The series promises to be a faithful and expansive adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s original books, with each season expected to cover one book from the seven-part saga.

Production on the new series adaptation starts over 14 years after the publication of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, the last film adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s books, in theaters. Since the first installment was released 28 years ago, the franchise has inspired computer games, amusement parks, and a Broadway play in addition to the popular films.

The network earlier stated that the new series will be “a faithful adaptation of the beloved Harry Potter books” and “will feature an exciting and talented cast to lead a new generation of fandom, full of the fantastic detail and much-loved characters that Harry Potter fans have adored for over 25 years.”
