The Legend of Bhagat Singh

A film about the life of the brave revolutionary Bhagat Singh, who fought against the British occupation and was martyred at the age of 23. Directed by Rajkumar Santoshi, the film was released in 2002 and starred Ajay Devgn as Bhagat Singh. Cinematography was done by KV Anand and the music was composed by AR Rahman. Although it did not achieve the expected success at the box office, the film won Ajay Devgn several awards, including the National Award for Best Actor. The film also won the National Award for Best Hindi Film of the year.

 

According to trackers, the film, which was made on a budget of 18 crores, managed to earn only 10 crores from India. The film 23 March 1931 Shaheed, which tells the story of Bhagat Singh’s life, and The Legend of Bhagat Singh hit the theatres on the same day. This clash release is said to be the main reason for the box office failure of both the films.

 

Mangal Pandey: The Rising

A bio-historical action drama film directed by Ketan Mehta and starring Aamir Khan, was released in 2005. This film is set in the life of Mangal Pandey, a sepoy in the Bengal Native Infantry of the East India Company. Ketan Mehta’s film tells the story of Mangal Pandey’s struggle that paved the way for the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, also known as the First Freedom Struggle.

 

The film, which was made on a budget of 34 crores and had a large canvas, also had many foreign stars. But this film managed to earn only 51.35 crores at the box office.

 

Gandhi

A famous film directed by British director Richard Attenborough based on the life of Mahatma Gandhi and the Indian freedom struggle. Even if you have not seen another film set in the Indian freedom struggle, you must have seen this film. The film, starring world-famous British actor Ben Kingsley as Mahatma Gandhi, also won him the Oscar for Best Actor that year. Not only did it win the Best Actor award, but Gandhi also swept the Oscars that year with 11 awards including Best Director, Best Film, Best Screenplay, Art Direction, and Cinematography.

 

It also won countless other awards including the American Cinema Editors Award, British Academy Film Awards, and Golden Globe. The American Film Institute has given this film the 29th position in its list of the most inspiring films. This film was a huge success at the box office as well.
