India’s Most Family-Friendly Film Industry Revealed: Ofc, It’s Not Bollywood!

Family-Friendly Film: For most Indians, childhood memories are filled with the excitement of grabbing a pack of popcorn and rushing into the theater to watch their favorite star on the big screen. But often, watching a movie with the whole family wasn’t easy-not because tickets were hard to get, but because of the explicit content shown on screen.

If we analyze the major film industries, it becomes clear that Bollywood tops the list when it comes to movies filled with vulgar or non–family-friendly content. Industries like Tollywood, and Bhojpuri cinema also follow closely behind.

But here’s the interesting part: which industry actually produces the most family-friendly films- those that earn a clean ‘U’ rating? The answer might surprise not you…

India’s Most Family-Friendly Film Industry Revealed: Ofc, It’s Not Bollywood!

Censorship is something that is often in the news regarding the film industry. The decisions of the censor board are often criticized. Now, an interesting study has come out regarding the certification of Indian films in different languages. This study has been conducted by CBFC Watch itself. The study is based on about eighteen thousand Indian films released from 2017 to 2025. This study also shows which languages are the most family-friendly films and which language films have received the most A certification.

Not only feature films, but also short films and music videos that are more than an hour long have been included in the study. Among the major film industries in India, the films that have received the most U certificates are from Malayalam. Tamil cinema is next in terms of U certificates. Bhojpuri cinema has received the least U certificates. It is also interesting to note that the percentage of Bhojpuri films in terms of U certificates is lower than that of censored English films in India.

Odia Movies supremacy

However, when it comes to A (adult) rated films, only Telugu and Kannada films in India account for more than 10 percent of the films with this rating. Meanwhile, more than 16 percent of the films in English films censored in India have an A certificate. Meanwhile, less than 7 percent of the films in Malayalam and Tamil films receive an A certificate.

Among the smaller film industries in India, Odia films have received the most U certificates. More than 42 percent of the films released in Odia have received a U certification. Only 1.2 percent of the films in this language have received an A certificate. Only 2.3 percent of the films in Gujarati films have received an A certificate. Dubbed films are censored as new films. There are also occasions when different language versions of the same film have received different ratings.

Meanwhile, the most repeated certification in Indian cinema is U/A. Regardless of the language, more than half of the films have a U/A certificate. These are films that can be watched by any audience. In the case of children, they can also be watched with parental supervision.
