Top-Grossing Debutant Film: Only three days have passed since Saiyaara’s theatrical debut, but Mohit Suri’s film is already smashing box office records. The movie, starring Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, made ₹85 crore in its first weekend of release, the most of any debutant-led Indian film to date. By the end of its run, the movie is probably going to break the previous record for a movie with debutants in the lead. However, that will only be in gross terms. Even after accounting for inflation and foot traffic, one film from fifty years ago continues to dominate the box office.
Which is India’s highest-grossing film led by debutants?
Raj Kapoor’s Bobby remains the most successful movie led by debutants. He introduced Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia in 1973 and turned them into overnight stars. The film earned ₹11 crore at the domestic box office on a budget of just ₹1 crore, becoming the highest-grossing Indian film of that year. According to the book Cinema Industry in India: Pricing and Taxation, over 5.35 crore people watched Bobby in Indian theatres. Adjusted for today’s inflation, its domestic box office collection would stand at approximately ₹1000 crore.
In comparison, Kaho Na Pyaar Hai, which launched Ameesha Patel and Hrithik Roshan, drew slightly more than 3 crore viewers in India. Its inflation-adjusted domestic gross now sits at around ₹600 crore. Despite its popularity, Saiyaara has attracted only about 50 lakh viewers in India so far. The film is expected to cross the 2 crore mark soon, but reaching 3 crore may prove challenging. However, in the current post-pandemic era, even that would mark a significant achievement.

Audiences in the Soviet Union bought 62.6 million tickets for Bobby and generated 15.65 million Rubles in revenue. Viewers in Southeast Asian countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore, many of them non-Indians, flocked to theaters despite the absence of subtitles, making the film a massive hit. Analysts estimate Bobby’s inflation-adjusted overseas gross to range between ₹600 and ₹800 crore, though figures may vary. No other Indian film starring debutants has matched its international success.
How did Bobby crack a pan-India blockbuster way back?
Bobby earned an incredible ₹11 crore at the Indian box office. Two years later, Sholay surpassed it by collecting ₹15 crore. Ten years after that, Disco Dancer broke Bobby’s international record. However, Bobby’s inflation-adjusted box office earnings, estimated at ₹1600–1800 crore today, rank it among the most successful Indian films ever. It even outperforms recent pan-Indian blockbusters like Jawan, Kalki 2898 AD, and RRR.
About Bobby:
Raj Kapoor created Bobby to launch his son Rishi Kapoor and recover the losses from his earlier film Mera Naam Joker. He cast Rishi only because he couldn’t afford to hire reigning superstar Rajesh Khanna. RK Films, his production company, produced the movie. The film featured 16-year-old Dimple Kapadia and 20-year-old Rishi Kapoor as teenage lovers who run away from home. Durga Khote, Aruna Irani, Pran, Prem Chopra, Farida Jalal, and Prem Nath also played key roles. Although critics gave the film mixed reviews upon release, it quickly gained massive popularity.
