Instagram’s New Location Feature Exposes Users’ Homes – Here’s How to Protect Yourself

Instagram’s New Location Feature Exposes Users’ Homes – Here’s How to Protect Yourself

Instagram’s New Location Sharing Raises Privacy Concerns

Instagram recently launched a location-sharing feature that lets users share their whereabouts on an interactive map, similar to Snapchat’s Snap Map. The feature aims to help friends connect by sharing posts from “cool spots.” However, some users have been shocked to discover their exact locations, including home addresses, were visible to followers without their prior knowledge.

Users Express Shock and Fear Online

Viral posts on TikTok reveal users’ alarm after finding the feature turned on by default or accidentally enabled. Lindsey Bell, an Instagram user, shared her distress when her home address was visible to all her followers. She said she turned it off immediately but was left feeling “absolutely sick.” Influencer Kelley Flanagan called the feature “dangerous” and posted a video explaining how to disable location sharing.

Instagram’s Response: Opt-In, Not Default

Instagram chief Adam Mosseri responded via Meta-owned Threads, emphasizing that location sharing is off by default. Users must actively choose to share their location and can limit the audience to a select group. Mosseri assured that users can turn the feature on or off at any time and stressed that the tool is meant to enhance social connection safely.

Wider Privacy Concerns for Meta

This controversy comes amid heightened scrutiny of Meta’s data practices. Just last week, a federal jury ruled against Meta for allegedly exploiting sensitive health data from the Flo app, which tracks menstruation and fertility. Meta reportedly used this information to target ads, sparking criticism over privacy and trust.

Protecting Your Privacy on Instagram

Users concerned about their privacy should review Instagram’s location settings immediately. Turning off location sharing and being cautious about which apps access personal data can help maintain control over your digital footprint.
