Mouni Roy On Nepotism: Mouni Roy gave a commendable performance as Junoon in Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva (2022). However, she stated that the blockbuster role did not result in a deluge of offers, as was anticipated. The actress confided that she “sat and dwelt on it,” not understanding why big-budget projects were not flooding her phone with calls.
According to Roy, one of the ugliest realities for outsiders in the industry is to be sidelined during casting calls. “Your name isn’t even taken in many discussions,” she shared. For her, the struggle isn’t about talent or capability. The problem is that the casting team often “can’t visualize you for a part” without giving you a chance to send in an audition.
Bollywood Vs Tollywood
Offers from mainstream films might have never come her way, but Mouni was busy with other things. She picked up roles in Sultan of Delhi, Showtime, and Salakaar, besides hosting. Yet this regular flow of work, she says, came due to her versatility and not because of the industry being open.
Mouni Roy recently entered Tollywood with a special song in Chiranjeevi’s Vishwambhara. Many actresses who came from Bollywood to Tollywood due to lack of offers has never regretted their shift.
‘Worth is Decided by the Latest Project’
Discussing the Bollywood dynamics, Roy pointed out how an actor’s worth can shift in a matter of weeks. “Your worth is determined by your latest project. If that doesn’t work out with the trends or with people’s expectations, then it is uphill,” says the actress, who admitted she expected “better prospects” after Brahmastra but never got those opportunities.
Hope for Equal Opportunities
Defeat notwithstanding, Mouni still hopes to be up in arms about getting auditions and having choices for decent roles. For her, the final aim is for a level playing field where talented outsiders have as much access to auditions as the insiders. “It’s a continuous battle every time,” she added, but it is one that she will fight.
