Not Just Nachiyappa: Malayalam Cinema’s Villainous Cops We Love to Hate

Release of Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra saw the introduction of Nachiyappa in the limelight, garnering huge accolades for Sandy Master’s performance as a great villain. Post this, the fans have started going through some of Malayalam film’s other iconic police villains who left an impression with their spine-chilling acts.

Here are a few notable characters other than Nachiyappa from Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra.

Nadeshan – Chotta Mumbai

Portrayed by the late Kalabhavan Mani, Nadeshan is a police officer who treads the fine line between justice and brutality. His authority figure and intimidating presence made him the most iconic villainous cops in Malayalam cinema. Nadeshan’s style of law enforcement revealed the darker side of authority, with audiences left both impressed and intimidated.

George Sir – Thudarum

George Sir, well played, is another impressive police figure. The character epitomizes a corrupt but calculating cop whose every move sets the tension in the movie. His intelligence, manipulative tactics, and commanding tone make him a textbook case of a bad cop in the trade.

Sahadevan – Drishyam

Kalabhavan Shajon’s Sahadevan is the quintessential police villain, one who employs brains and tenacity over muscle. In Drishyam, his single-minded pursuit of facts, as well as lapses into moral relativism, creates a multi-dimensional character out of him. The tension-filled confrontations between the character and the protagonist are now iconic to contemporary Malayalam cinema.

Aju Varghese – Helen

Though mostly typecast in comic or friendly roles, Aju Varghese’s performance of a police officer in Helen demonstrates his range. His role combines authority and underlying menace, delivering a realistic but low-key interpretation of policing in a high-pressure situation.

Gaurisankar – CID Moosa

Ashish Vidyarthi as Gaurisankar is best remembered for his bigger-than-life villainy. His comical approach and exaggerated mannerisms provide a theatrical touch to the police villain trope. Gaurisankar stands out as one of the most enjoyable and endearing police villains in Malayalam films.

Eapen Pappachi – Meesa Madhavan

Indrajith’s Eapen Pappachi is the ideal blend of charm and danger. His crafty methods and wicked manipulations make him a memorable bad guy. The character’s interesting combination of humor and intimidation marks him as the standout in police officer roles on the big screen.

From Nachiyappa to these unforgettable actors, Malayalam films have always produced police villains as iconic and menacing as they are. Each of them embodies some other hue of villainy, leaving audiences captivated.
