Ravi Kishan: There have been many discussions about casting in Bollywood, especially about the impact of religion or stardom. Recently, there was a discussion on the selection of Ravi Kishan for ‘Laapata Ladies’. Ravi Kishan clearly said in an interview with Shubhankar Mishra that once there were talks about Aamir Khan playing this character. But when director Kiran Rao saw Aamir’s audition, she found Ravi to be a better fit for the role. Although Mr. Perfectionist had already shown interest in this role before. Aamir Khan also practiced a lot for the role of police officer Shyam Manohar, he was seen speaking his lines with complete hard work.
Aamir Khan was the producer of the movie Missing Ladies, he had invested his own money in this movie. But he missed out on playing this iconic character. The director of this movie, Kiran Rao, did the casting based on the demand of the character. She believed that if she had chosen Aamir, the balance of the story would have been disturbed and the character would not have the ‘desiness’ of a rural policeman. After seeing Ravi Kishan’s audition, Kiran Rao felt that his style and expression would be perfect for this role. Fans and critics also believe that Ravi Kishan’s acting, experience of playing rural characters in Hindi films and his style of speaking dialogues looked very realistic in the film.
Ravi Kishan admitted that Aamir Khan is a very mature actor, and any director would have been honoured to have chosen him, but his selection was more appropriate for the demands of ‘Laapata Ladies’ and the flavour of the character. It had nothing to do with religion or star power, rather the actor’s fitting and his truthfulness were given top priority. This was the reason why Aamir himself agreed with the director’s decision. While sharing his screen test, he told the audience that Ravi Kishan played this role better than him.
