Sardaar Ji 3 was set for an India-wide release. But backlash came quickly after fans noticed Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in the cast.
Film worker associations objected. They cited national sentiment, especially after the recent Pahalgam terror attack. Some called for an outright ban not just on the film, but on Diljit Dosanjh’s future projects. The result? The film skipped Indian cinemas entirely. Producers admitted to a 40% loss in revenue.
Several celebrities voiced concern. Singer Mika Singh lashed out at Diljit Dosanjh, calling him “irresponsible” and accusing him of putting fan trust at risk. He later softened his stance, asking for an apology and the removal of “objectionable” scenes.
Guru Randhawa shared a cryptic message on social media, urging artists to “be proud of where they were born.” Many interpreted it as a subtle jab at Diljit.
Other voices like Abhijeet Bhattacharya, B Praak, and Sonakshi Sinha also weighed in, echoing sentiments that the film’s timing and casting were insensitive.
In a sharp contrast, several senior voices stood by the film. Naseeruddin Shah defended Diljit, saying actors don’t cast films they perform in them. He called the backlash “dirty politics.”
Javed Akhtar added perspective. He pointed out that no Pakistani money was involved. The producers were Indian. Punishing them served no real cause. He urged people to see the film as a work of art, not a political statement.
The film released internationally on June 27. It opened to strong box office numbers in Pakistan, North America, and the Middle East. Videos showed packed cinemas and cheering crowds.
Critics abroad praised Diljit’s performance. The emotional plot and cross-border theme struck a chord with many.

Diljit clarified that Sardaar Ji 3 was completed before the Pahalgam attack. He said he respects national emotions but hopes audiences can separate politics from creativity.
He admitted the film would suffer losses but said the team stood by their decision.
The Sardaar Ji 3 storm has exposed a deeper divide in Bollywood. One side demands caution. The other defends courage.
