Singer Shaan has called out the trend of AI voice cloning in the music industry. He strongly criticised using artificial intelligence to recreate songs in the voices of legendary singers. In a recent interview, he described the practice as “cruel” and “wrong.” He said it disrespects the legacy of greats like Kishore Kumar and Mohammed Rafi.
Shaan believes AI cannot replicate the soul of a real artist. “It is wrong to make a song sound like they would sing it that way,” he said. “What they sang in the 40s, 60s, or 80s was shaped by their time and their emotions. You can’t fake that.” He argued that taking the tone from a few old tracks and creating dozens of fake covers is misleading. According to him, it reduces great artists to data points.
He didn’t mince words for the audience either. “The audience is silly to compare AI voices with real ones,” he said. He called it “unfair” when listeners praised AI-generated versions like Kishore Kumar’s voice singing modern songs like Saiyaara. Shaan urged people to stop listening to AI covers and instead enjoy the original songs sung by the legends themselves.
