Sunny Deol’s upcoming drama Safar will now have a theatrical release in late 2025, skipping its earlier OTT plan. Directed by Shashank Udapurkar, the film sees Deol in a more grounded, emotional role far from the high-octane action characters he portrayed in Gadar 2 and Jaat.
Sources say Deol considers Safar one of his finest performances. In the film, he plays a family man who chooses to dedicate his life to helping others. After screening the film for close friends like Rahul Nanda, Abbas-Mustan, and Rajkumar Santoshi, the actor was reportedly convinced to release it in cinemas. Friends compared the film’s impact to Satyakam (1969), a career-defining film for his father, Dharmendra.
For an actor known for his action roles, Safar marks a bold shift. With Simran Bagga in a key role, the film will test Deol’s appeal in the emotional drama genre. Sources suggest the actor wants the film to reach a broader audience and believes the big screen will offer the right experience.
Sunny Deol plans to return from the U.S. this week and will take charge of the film’s promotions. He will work closely with the team to finalise the marketing and release strategy. The team is eyeing a release window in November or December 2025.
