Superman Movie Review: James’ Best or Worst Performance

Superman Movie Review: James’ Best or Worst Performance

Superman Movie Review: You expect to watch a dashing man fly through the sky, performing heroic feats in his tights and iconic underwear. Instead, the film delivers a universe as mind-bending as Interstellar. Even when James Gunn directs with a playful tone, he approaches the story with intensity. Famous for Guardians of the Galaxy and now serving as DC Studios CEO, Gunn aims to resurrect the DC Universe with purpose. In this Superman saga, Nicholas Hoult plays Lex Luthor, a brilliant, unhinged billionaire who advises a loud, self-obsessed president (you can guess who). Luthor obsesses over space domination, just like rival nations.

To achieve his cosmic goals, Luthor builds a “pocket universe”, a realm suspended between universes, where anti-proton rivers surge into black holes. He also injects nanites into his enemies’ bloodstreams, usually with help from his cold, lethal foot soldier known only as Engineer (Faria). Later in the film, a rift in space-time threatens to consume entire cities, raising the stakes even higher. Sure, it all feels over-the-top, and it is. But Superman keeps fighting, falling, planning, bleeding, and enduring, never stopping for long. It’s oddly refreshing to watch a superhero take hits and bruises, even if he heals at superhuman speed.

The writer-director gives Superman, a.k.a. Clark (Corenswet), a brief and endearing introduction, making the all-Gunn-blazing treatment that follows feel unexpected. Recognizing that most audiences already know the origin story of the Kryptonian baby who landed on Earth, James Gunn skips the usual exposition; he even omits Lois Lane’s classic “Clark Kent is Superman in glasses!” moment.

Gunn depicts Jahranpur, a desert nation, with a diverse population, people with skin tones ranging from white to black, men with long beards, covered heads, ragged clothing, and spears in hand, as they charge at Bovaria’s tanks. Corenswet embodies Superman with his curled lock of hair, dimpled cheeks, broad shoulders, and ripped forearms, making him as charming as the superhero has ever been. Krypto the superdog, always by his side, adds even more warmth and charisma.

When Gunn introduces the Justice Gang, Hawkgirl, Mr. Terrific, Green Lantern, and Metamorpho, he brings the same effortless synergy he mastered in Guardians of the Galaxy. Meanwhile, Superman races across the screen at incredible speeds, and the film’s 3D effects shine with immersive quality.
