Tamil filmmaker Selvaraghavan is stepping in front of the camera for the first time in Malayalam cinema. Known for his iconic direction in films like Kaadhal Kondein and Pudhupettai, he now plays a key role in Balti. His character, Porthamarai Bhairavan, is a fierce devotee of Kalabhairavan, adding a spiritual and mysterious layer to the film.
Balti is led by Malayalam star Shane Nigam, marking his 25th lead role. Shane plays Udhayan, a fearless kabaddi raider known for his aggressive style on the court. Tamil actor Shanthnu Bhagyaraj joins as Kumar, while director Alphonse Puthren takes on the role of a gangster named Soda Babu. This mix of talents from Tamil and Malayalam cinema makes the film a unique crossover project.
Directed by newcomer Unni Sivalingam, Balti is a kabaddi-based sports action film with strong commercial appeal. The movie combines raw sports action with elements of mythology and drama. It promises intense stunts choreographed by Action Sandhosh and Vicky, backed by fresh technical talent like cinematographer Alex J Pulickal and editor Shivkumar V Panicker.
Filming took place in Coimbatore, Palakkad, and Pollachi, highlighting the blend of Tamil and Malayalam cultures. Originally slated for an Onam release, the premiere has been delayed. Balti is now set to hit theaters worldwide on September 26, 2025.
