Thammudu Movie Review: Can Pawan Kalyan Title Save Nithin?

Thammudu Movie Review: Can Pawan Kalyan Title Save Nithin?

Nithin Thammudu Movie Review: Thammudu is memorable in itself; it will be able to catch people’s attention because it is a title already made legendary by the actor Pawan Kalyan. It is a high-stakes comeback kind of film for Nithin, whose career has been struggling post the movie Bheeshma. Dil Raju is producing it and that too at a record ₹70 crore budget in Nithin’s career, hence all eyes are on whether this emotionally charged action drama could end his five-year dry spell at the box office.

Story

Thammudu begins with a horrific chemical factory blast in Vizag. Which is soon followed by an event foregrounded against a context of corporate greed and systemic injustice. Thousands perish in this disaster, and corrupt industrialist Ajarwal (played by Saurabh Sachdeva). Through his ill-gotten wealth, escapes from all punishment. Jhansi Kiranmai (played by Laya), head of an investigation committee set up to probe the incident, vows to provide justice only to find herself caught in the crosshairs.

Meanwhile, Jai (Nithin), an archer by trade, haunted by the absence of his sister Snehalatha (also Laya), sets out to seek her out. Along with Chitra (Varsha Bollamma), this journey ends in the village where their ultimate test becomes just survival against Ajarwal’s personal militia and an entire village of threats.

Analysis

The film changed tones midway into a sports-family drama survival-action thriller. While there is potential in the idea, that potential is wasted in less-than-flattering execution. Besides, the product will be given an ‘A’ certificate, even though it lacks that intensity and maturity to back the label. Emotional depth, which usually accompanies such a sibling-centric tale, is absolutely missing here.

The first half, indeed, crawls with no novelty to boast, while the second half, camped out in a wooded area overnight, could have set up a high-octane sequence but ends up diluted with slow action and misplaced comedy. While there is sporadic tension (take delivery for example), the flick is not quite able to maintain a consistent engagement.

Plus Points

Nithin’s acting seems honest

Engaging second half centering around survival

Villain character has a refreshing arc

Minus Points

Weak emotional connect

The first half drags

Background score and songs fall flat

Unrequired comedy takes away from tension

Final Verdict

Thammudu has a pretty good premise and an incredibly strong principal performance, but in reality, it fails to establish what exactly the movie intends to convey about itself. The emotional core is so undercooked that while the second half does add a little heft, it’s hardly enough. A lost opportunity that does neither honor to its title nor resurrects Nithin’s career.

Rating: 1.75/5 – Thammudu, A journey of brother devoid of heart.
