War 2 vs Coolie Budget Breakdown: War 2 and Coolie are two of the most keenly awaited films in India. They are both set to be released with outstretched budgets and expectations to boot. The inclusion of massive stars, well-honed directors, and high-octane action sequences has rendered the films some of the most expensive investments in Indian cinema to date. But which project has more at stake economically?
War 2, one of the prominent films in YRF’s Spy Universe. It is said to have a budget ranging between ₹350 and ₹400 crore. Besides Ayan Mukerji, the film stars Hrithik Roshan, Jr NTR, and Kiara Advani. The budget includes international schedules, lavish VFX. And highly stylized action sequences flying in stunt teams from all over the world. A significant portion of it will go into marketing the film so that it becomes a household name in India and abroad.
Coolie on the other hand, made under Lokesh Kanagaraj’s direction featuring Rajinikanth. It is said to be mounted on a budget ranging from 250 to 300 crores. War 2’s budget is marginally less than this, but practical action, grandiose sets, and Anirudh’s musical score would all be made in this film. Also because it is a part of the LCU, costs related to world-building and fan-service across various narratives would have been considered as well.
And although Coolie is among the most-huge budgets for a Tamil film, Rajinikanth’s unmatched box-office pull in South India cuts down risk. Most of his movies have such openings strong enough to recover investments, buoyed by profit from satellite and OTT deals.

On the other hand, War 2 focuses on the pan-India spy-action space. Where the expectations lean not just on the box office but also the continuity of the YRF Spy Universe. A mediocre response would mean a dent in the future entries of the franchise, making its stakes higher. The other big risk factor is the film’s reliance on expensive VFX and performance in the international market.
Financially, it appears that War 2 has more at stake since it has accrued high costs. Relies on the market, and has to carry the load of maintaining a successful franchise. On the other hand, such a high-risk venture as Coolie would have paid off massively. Owing to Rajinikanth’s mass appeal and the debut of the slowly rising fanbase of the LCU that, thus, increases its chances of recovery.
