Who Will Break the Flop Streak of Lady-Centric Films?

Anushka – Rashmika: In recent years, South Indian cinema has witnessed a clear struggle for female-centric films at the box office. Despite big names like Samantha, Trisha, Tamannaah Bhatia, and Nayanthara leading projects with strong women-oriented themes, success has been elusive. Even younger talents such as Anupama Parameshwaran failed to impress audiences; her latest film Paradha couldn’t even secure a decent opening despite heavy promotions.

The list of disappointments is long. Samantha’s Yashoda and Shaakuntalam ended without a trace, while Trisha’s Rangi and The Road also fell flat. Tamannaah had to face embarrassment with Odela 2, and Anjali’s Geethanjali Malli Vachindhi did nothing to break the losing streak. Even Nayanthara, who once carried films on her shoulders, couldn’t score with Annapoorani: The Goddess of Food. Ironically, there was a time when women-led films were consistent money-spinners. Stars like Anushka Shetty and Nayanthara delivered blockbusters in that category. But times have changed, and the formula seems broken.

Now, all eyes are once again on Anushka Shetty, who is returning with Ghaati, a film touted to revive the women-centric genre. While Anushka still enjoys a loyal fanbase, the bigger question remains: Can she match today’s reigning star, Rashmika Mandanna? Rashmika, with back-to-back blockbusters and pan-India craze, is already miles ahead in the box office race. Her upcoming solo film, The Girl Friend, has created massive buzz, and fans expect it to break barriers that even senior heroines couldn’t.

So, will Anushka really break Rashmika’s stardom? Can Ghaati outperform The Girlfriend? Or will the younger star continue her unstoppable run while Anushka struggles to reclaim her old glory? Only time and the audience will decide who finally ends the flop jinx of lady-centric films.
