Fake APK Files:
Cybercrime is growing fast, and fraudsters are finding new ways to cheat innocent people. Recently, Hyderabad Police warned citizens about a dangerous new scam involving fake APK files. These files are being sent through WhatsApp, Telegram, and other social media platforms. Once a person downloads and installs these files, their mobile phone can be hacked within minutes.
An APK file is an installation file used for Android apps. Cyber criminals are misusing this by creating fake apps that look like they belong to banks, government departments, or service providers. They name these files in a way that makes them appear genuine, such as TOChallan.apk, PMKisanYojana.apk, ElectricityBill.apk, Creditcard.apk, or rewardpoints.apk. Many people, thinking these are official apps, click and install them without checking.
Once installed, these fake apps ask for permissions like access to SMS, contacts, notifications, and screen sharing. If the user allows this, the fraudsters gain full control of the phone. They can read OTP messages, steal banking details, and transfer money from the victim’s bank account. In several cases, people have lost large amounts of money due to this trick. Hundreds of cases have already been reported in Hyderabad, making the police raise an alert.
The Cyber Police clearly stated that no government or bank will send APK files directly through messages. All official apps are available only on the Google Play Store or Apple App Store. Any link asking you to install an unknown file should be treated as suspicious.
To stay safe, the police have issued some important instructions. Never download APK files from unknown links. Do not click on messages that promise rewards, cashback, or urgent KYC updates. Never share your OTP, PIN, or banking details with any app or person. Make sure your phone software is updated regularly and install a reliable antivirus if possible.
If you receive a suspicious message, delete it immediately and inform the cybercrime helpline. Being alert and careful is the best way to protect yourself from digital fraud. One careless click can empty your bank account, so always think before you tap.
Stay informed, stay safe, and do not fall for fake APK traps. Your awareness can save not only your money but also your personal data and privacy.
