How Did the Russian Plane Crash? Here’s What We Know

Russian Plane Crash Cause: State news outlet Tass reported that a crew error during landing in low visibility likely caused Thursday’s passenger plane crash in Russia’s far eastern Amur region. The Antonov An-24, operated by Angara Airlines, failed to check in at a designated control point while approaching Tynda Airport. Shortly afterward, it disappeared from radar. Early reports, cited by Tass, confirmed there were no survivors.

The aircraft was flying approximately 570 kilometers on a domestic route from Blagoveshchensk to Tynda. Multiple agencies confirmed that the plane lost communication with air traffic controllers just a few kilometers before reaching its destination. The Ministry of Emergencies stated that the aircraft went off radar near the town of Tynda, close to Russia’s border with China. Media reports indicated that the plane was likely within sight of the airport when it lost contact. Tass confirmed that the aircraft failed to establish communication at the final checkpoint near Tynda Airport.

Burning Wreckage in Secluded Forest:

Search teams found the crash site hours after the jet vanished. “A Mi-8 helicopter operated by Rosaviatsiya (Russia’s civil aviation authority) has spotted the burning fuselage of the aircraft,” the Russian emergency ministry posted on Telegram. Local media sites posted pictures of dense smoke billowing from the taiga, the boreal forest that covers a large portion of the area, on social media. Because of the rough terrain and extensive forest, rescue teams had a difficult time getting to the scene.

Confusion on Number of Passengers:

Regional Governor Vasily Orlov confirmed, based on preliminary data, that the plane carried six crew members and 43 passengers, including five children. He stated on Telegram that authorities had deployed all necessary forces and resources to search for the missing aircraft. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Emergency Services estimated that approximately 40 people were on board. Russia Today also reported that five children were among the 47 passengers listed.

Why are older airplanes still in use?
The Soviet Union created the twin turboprop Antonov An-24 aircraft in the late 1950s. It continues to operate regularly throughout Russia, especially in isolated and underdeveloped areas. Many of the more than 1,000 aircraft that were constructed are still in service today, primarily on regional routes. The flight’s operator, Angara Airlines, is situated in Siberia and often operates flights in places with poor infrastructure and harsh weather.
