Nobel Prize 2025: For their groundbreaking research on peripheral immunological tolerance, a mechanism that shields the body from an immune attack by the immune system itself, Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi shared the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Regulatory T cells, the immune system’s security guards that maintain equilibrium and guard against autoimmune illness, were found through their research. This discovery has sparked the development of novel therapies for autoimmune diseases, cancer, and transplant problems following stem cell transplantation, as well as opening up a new field of study.

1. Mary E. Brunkow:

Born in 1961, Mary E. Brunkow graduated with a Ph.D. from Princeton University in the United States. She currently works at the Institute for Systems Biology in Seattle as a Senior Program Manager. Her research established the role of the FOXP3 gene in controlling regulatory T cells by connecting immune regulation illnesses like IPEX syndrome to abnormalities in the gene.

2. Fred Ramsdell:

Born in 1960, Fred Ramsdell graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1987 with a Ph.D. He is currently employed at the Parker Institute and Sonoma Biotherapeutics in San Francisco as a Scientific Advisor. Ramsdell made a key contribution in understanding the operation of regulatory T cells and co-discovered the importance of the FOXP3 gene and its mutations in preserving immunological balance and regulation.

3. Shimon Sakaguchi:

Japan is where Shimon Sakaguchi was born in 1951. He graduated from Kyoto University with an M.D. in 1976 and a Ph.D. in 1983. At Osaka University’s Immunology Frontier Research Center, Sakaguchi has the title of Distinguished Professor. Sakaguchi discovered that regulatory T cells (CD4+CD25+) are essential for maintaining peripheral immunological tolerance and suppressing overreactions. The foundation for comprehending the role of the FOXP3 gene in immune regulation was established by his efforts.
