School Holiday on Sep 9:
Across India, many schools will remain closed on Tuesday, 9 September 2025, because of heavy rainfall, flood-like conditions, and regional festivals. State governments have released official notices to ensure the safety of students and teachers.
In Jammu and Kashmir, schools in the Kashmir Valley have already been shut for over a week due to continuous rainfall and waterlogging. Authorities have now directed schools to reopen from 10 September, after taking necessary safety measures.
In Punjab, schools will reopen on 9 September. Relief operations under Operation Rahat are also being carried out for affected families.
In Rajasthan, the Jaisalmer district administration has declared a holiday in all government schools and Anganwadi centers due to the Indian Meteorological Department’s prediction of heavy rainfall. Students from Classes 1 to 12 will get a day off, but staff members must report to duty.
Uttar Pradesh’s Mathura district is also facing problems as the Yamuna River’s rising water level has entered school premises. The district administration has ordered the closure of all government, private, and aided schools for Classes 1 to 12. The closure may be extended if water levels do not recede.
Meanwhile, in Kerala, schools under corporation limits will remain closed on 9 September as part of Onam celebrations, marking the end of the week-long festival.
These closures highlight how weather conditions and cultural festivals play an important role in shaping the academic calendar in India. While students may welcome an unexpected holiday, authorities are focusing on ensuring safety and managing risks caused by floods and heavy rain.
