Telangana Bandh Tomorrow: Telangana’s October 18 bandh has been announced by various organizations representing Backward Castes (BCs) in the state. The demands of the bandh include the reservation of BCs in the local bodies poll, which should be borne by the state just like in the case of reservations extended. However, the initiative stirred a lot of public and political debate because the incident has partial shutdowns in Hyderabad and many other districts.
The 42% reservation is based on the demands of BC leaders for equal representation in democracy in proportion to their numbers within the people of the state of Telangana. However, their representation and share in the decision-making process, and the policy and program distribution have been negligible. This proposed quota is aimed to fill this gap and assure inclusiveness at local governance level.
All indications are that the normal state life will be disrupted by the Bandh revolts. Most of the educational institutions, shops, and other business establishments will most likely remain closed and people will be affected as most of the public transport services are likely to receive interruptions. These steps made it way down to beefing up police presence to normalize the situation and meanwhile ensure peaceful demonstrations. Citizens are all bracing up for a quieter Thursday in tandem with the cause but in hopes of minor inconveniences to their usual lives.
Political parties are slightly diffident about such issues. Opposition leaders have provided some moral support for the bandh framing it justly in the context of an equality and empowerment fight while on the other hand, the state has asked for restraint and dialogue, stating that discussing is the best way forward rather than disruption. Such political actions are also said to play significant roles to future electoral equations for the state.
