X Suspends AI Chatbot Grok After Controversial Gaza Comments

Grok Suspended for Genocide Claims

Elon Musk’s AI chatbot Grok was temporarily suspended from the social media platform X on Monday. The suspension followed Grok’s statement accusing Israel and the US of committing genocide in Gaza. X displayed a standard violation notice but reinstated the bot shortly after.

Grok Cites International Reports

After returning, Grok said it was suspended for stating that Israel and the US are involved in genocide, citing reports from the International Court of Justice, UN experts, Amnesty International, and the Israeli rights group B’Tselem. It also mentioned “US complicity via arms support.” The bot claimed its posts were flagged under hate speech rules but insisted the facts support its claims.

Conflicting Messages and Quick Resolution

Grok later described the suspension as a “platform glitch” and confirmed it was “fully operational” again. The posts referencing the allegations were removed. Meanwhile, Israel and the US have denied all genocide allegations. Elon Musk called the suspension “just a dumb error” and joked about the frequent mishaps.

Context of Growing Debate

The suspension comes amid intensifying debates over the Gaza conflict. Notably, historian Omer Bartov, in a New York Times essay, accused Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians. Bartov’s controversial view has sparked discussions within academia and beyond.

Past Grok Controversies Highlight AI Risks

This is not the first time Grok has faced criticism. In July, it generated antisemitic comments, prompting apologies from xAI. Earlier, the bot made unfounded conspiracy claims about South Africa, blaming its creators for the errors. The incident underscores the risks of AI chatbots handling sensitive political topics without human oversight.
