Curd in Winter: Healthy Choice or Hidden Risk?

Curd in Winter: Healthy Choice or Hidden Risk?

Curd in Winter:

In many Indian homes, people avoid eating curd during the winter season. The common belief is that curd increases cold, cough, and mucus in the body. While this fear is popular, the truth is a little more balanced. According to Ayurveda, curd can be both helpful and harmful, depending on how and when it is eaten.

Curd in Winter:

Curd, also known as dahi, is rich in good bacteria called probiotics. These bacteria improve digestion and keep the gut healthy. Curd is also full of calcium, protein, vitamin B12, and vitamin D. These nutrients help strengthen bones, boost immunity, and keep the body energetic during cold months. So, curd itself is not bad for winter. The problem comes from wrong timing and wrong combinations.

Ayurveda explains that curd has a heavy and warm nature. It helps balance Vata dosha but increases Kapha and Pitta if eaten in excess. In winter, Kapha already increases naturally, which can lead to cold, cough, sinus issues, and weight gain. Eating curd at the wrong time can make these problems worse.

According to Ayurveda, curd should never be eaten at night. At night, digestion becomes slow, and curd can cause toxin build-up in the body. It is also advised to avoid curd during fever, cold, chest congestion, or when digestion is weak.

However, there are simple and safe ways to eat curd even in winter. One of the best ways is to turn curd into buttermilk by adding water. Adding roasted cumin powder, rock salt, ginger, or black pepper makes it lighter and easier to digest. Fresh curd eaten during lunch with warm food like rice is considered safe for most people.

You should always eat fresh curd and avoid leftover or sour curd. Removing the cream layer also makes it easier to digest.

In short, curd is not completely wrong for winter. When eaten in the right way, at the right time, and in small quantity, it can actually support your health instead of harming it.
