Premature Greying:
Many people today face the problem of premature greying of hair. While it is natural for hair to turn white with age, nowadays even young people are seeing grey strands before the age of 30. To cover them or for style, many people use hair dyes. But a common question is: Does applying hair dye make the rest of the hair turn white faster?
Dermatologist Vimala Sangam has clarified this doubt. She explains that the natural colour of hair comes from a pigment called melanin. As we grow older, the production of melanin reduces, and hair starts turning grey. Apart from age, reasons like stress, poor diet, exposure to sunlight, health problems, and family history can also lead to early greying.
Now coming to hair dye—Dr. Panth says it is a myth that dyeing hair causes more greying. Hair turns white from the roots, and dye is applied only to the hair shaft, not the root. The pores in the scalp are very tiny, so the dye cannot go inside to change how the hair grows. However, chemical dyes may make hair dry, weak, and dull. This damage may give the impression that greying has increased.
So, should you stop colouring your hair? The choice is completely yours. If you want to colour, it is better to use good quality products and avoid frequent applications. Natural options like henna and indigo are also available. Proper care like pre-conditioning and oiling is important for dyed hair.
There are also home remedies believed to help slow down greying. For example, curry leaves boiled in coconut oil and applied regularly may help. A mix of coconut oil and lemon juice is also said to nourish the scalp and support healthy hair. Along with these, eating a balanced diet, drinking enough water, and managing stress are key for good hair health.
