Growing garlic indoors is a simple and enjoyable activity, especially for people living in apartments or homes without a garden. With the right methods, you can enjoy fresh garlic greens throughout the year and even grow your own bulbs. Indoor garlic needs the correct amount of light, proper soil, and regular watering to grow well, but once you understand the steps, the process becomes very easy.

Garlic is a small plant, so it grows well in containers. Choose a pot that is at least 6 inches deep and has a drainage hole to remove extra water. Clay or terracotta pots are great choices because they absorb moisture, but any pot with good drainage will work. Fill it with loose, well-draining soil and place it in a spot that receives six to eight hours of sunlight daily. If your home doesn’t get enough sunlight, you can use a grow light to help the plant get the brightness it needs.

Unlike outdoor garlic, which is usually planted during winter, indoor garlic can be grown at any time of the year. But to help the garlic sprout and develop healthy bulbs, it needs a short cold period. You can do this by keeping the garlic cloves in the refrigerator for a few weeks before planting.

Start by separating the garlic bulbs into individual cloves, keeping their thin skin intact. Make sure to choose firm, healthy cloves. Fill your pot with soil, leaving some space at the top. Place the cloves into the soil with the pointed end facing upward. If you want bulbs, keep at least 6 inches of space between each clove. For greens, you can plant them closer together. Cover lightly with soil and water gently.

Garlic needs bright light, regular moisture, and stable indoor temperature. Water only when the top layer of soil feels dry. For growing greens, fertiliser is not needed. But if you want bulbs, you can use a mild liquid fertiliser once or twice a month.

With a little patience and care, growing garlic indoors can give you fresh greens for cooking and, if conditions are perfect, home-grown bulbs right from your kitchen.
