Pornhub has lost 80% of its traffic in the US and UK due to the enactment of new age-verification laws that prevent anyone under 18 from entering the site without valid ID. Many adults are hesitant to upload identification info as well.
Despite being a major porn site, Aylo, Porhub’s parent company, is reaching out to Google and Microsoft to quickly find a better solution. The company wants age check-verification by device, rather than by site, claiming the lost traffic for all porn sites as a result of age-verification laws is too much.
The letters to Google and Microsoft were written by Pornhub’s Chief Legal Officer Anthony Penhale, who says site-verification will not work and is flawed. Users were clearly not prepared to provide sensitive and personal ID data to a third-party company who they may or may not know and when this is the case, they just leave the site and never return.
Pornhub acknowledges the need to prevent minors from accessing adult content, but it wants age-verification built into systems like Google and Microsoft as *operating system-specific verification*. Phones and computers will check age with verification databases without needing to turn over your identification. This will keep privacy intact, and keep traffic flowing.
Various states and nations are now requiring a variety of verification regulations. Sites that host pornographic material encounter enormous operational challenges every month. Most consumers do not want to provide personal data to even legitimate businesses where they know nothing about the business. Traffic collapses however strong verification requirements are.
The number of visitors in the areas affected were down by as much as 80%. Pornhub is already begging tech platforms for some sort of emergency help. It is suggesting current laws may only push users to unsafe sites. The company is waiting for Google and Microsoft, among other tech platforms, to respond.
