Should Street Dogs Be Removed? The Internet Debates

Street Dogs: There is a controversial debate going on within the country with regard to the people’s new demand that stray dogs be removed from public places. Many people here claim that authorities and social media users misdirect attention regarding matters that far more serious issues which include air pollution, public health risks within the public sphere. “People are dying due to pollution, yet the major concern seems to be the dogs on the street,” summed up the frustration of many users.

The Question of Removed and Sent Where?

Some feel that relocating stray dogs would solve problems of safety and hygiene while others think that this is unrealistic. Critics ask-removal and sending where? Funding for and management of shelter facilities would also be a major issue. Reference was made to cases like that of the Rohini Sector 51 incident, where unplanned relocation resulted in utter chaos. Many fear this measure will just shift the problem rather than solve it.

The Real Solution: Sterilization, Not Relocation

Animal welfare lobbyists insist that the major humane and effective solution is the Animal Birth Control (ABC). According to them, sterilizing female dogs would, in the natural way, lead to a control of their population after about ten years, since most stray dogs do not live more than 10-12 years. Again, that program had long been brought down by corruption and lack of accountability in its operations.

“Rather than wasting money on meaningless relocations, they should rather see to transforming that money to NGOs that already have been lying down with the work,” one animal welfare activist has asserted. They instead run spaying and vaccination programs directly funded by donors.

Compassion and Accountability Required

Everyone seems to agree that the issue of street dog’s overpopulation is a serious one, but does it warrant removal? Most people speak of proper sterilization plans funded well coupled with civic accountability as the only sustainable measures to create safety for both humans and animals.
