A tragic event has taken place in Madhya Pradesh, Chhindwara district, where many small children lost their lives. They had taken a contaminated cough syrup. The kids were having fever and cold. Their ages ranged from two to five years.
A pediatrician named Dr. Praveen Soni prescribed the syrup. The syrup was named ‘Coldrif’. The police have now arrested him.
Tests from the laboratory have found that the syrup contains a toxic chemical. This chemical is Diethylene Glycol. The concentration was lethal at 48.3%. Samples were tested in a government lab in Chennai. The Tamil Nadu Drug Control Directorate has declared the syrup to be substandard. It not only failed to meet quality standards but also safety standards.
Diethylene Glycol is a highly toxic chemical. It is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless liquid. It has a sweetish taste and a syrupy consistency. Its main use is for industrial purposes. It is definitely not for human consumption. Using this substance in medicine shows a lack of care on a monumental scale.
Dr. Prabhakar Tiwari, a pediatrician, explained its toxic effects. We take in the chemical in the form of syrup. Our intestines absorb it into the blood. The blood then carries it to every organ of the body.
The liver is supposed to cleanse the body of toxins. The kidneys are at the front line in removing the waste through urine. However, this chemical takes over the body’s natural defenses. The kidneys are not able to filter this powerful poison out. It attacks the kidney’s filtering units. As a result, it causes kidney failure. The toxin then finds its way to other vital organs.
The poison can affect any part of the body. The first and most affected are the kidneys. The poison damages the liver and the brain. It can also harm the heart and lungs. The toxin alters the body’s acid-base balance. This is known as metabolic acidosis. It can lead to the body going into severe shock. The side that these organs fail is usually fatal.
Poisoning survivors only face their first fight next. Long-term side effects that haunt them may occur. They can get several kidney diseases. Damage to the brain and liver can become irreversible. They will require medical care for the rest of their lives.
