Thyroid cancer occurs when malignant cells form in the tissues of the thyroid gland, a butterfly-shaped gland at the base of the neck. If detected early, it is usually treatable. Although thyroid cancer is relatively rare, there has been a recent increase in the number of cases. The disease can occur at any age, but it is most common in women between the ages of 30 and 60.
1. A small lump or swelling in the neck
One of the first signs of thyroid cancer is a lump or swelling in the lower front of the neck. This lump is often painless and grows slowly, so it may go unnoticed for a long time. Many people ignore it because it does not initially cause pain or discomfort. Since lumps can also be caused by non-cancerous conditions, such as cysts or goiters, people often delay seeing a doctor. But if you notice any new or growing lump in your neck, don’t hesitate to see your doctor.
2. Hoarseness
Thyroid cancer can affect the nerves that control your vocal cords, which can cause a change in your voice or a hoarse voice. So if your voice becomes hoarse and doesn’t improve after a few weeks, don’t ignore it.
3. Difficulty swallowing or breathing
As a tumor grows, it may press on your esophagus (the tube that carries food to your stomach) or windpipe. This pressure can make it difficult to swallow or feel like something is stuck in your throat. Breathing problems can occur when a tumor presses on your windpipe, causing shortness of breath or noisy breathing. These symptoms are often mistaken for acid reflux, infections, or allergies. Because they develop slowly, many people don’t realize they may be related to thyroid cancer.
4. Constant pain in the neck or throat
Chronic pain in the front of the neck or throat can be a symptom of thyroid cancer. This pain can sometimes spread to the ears. People often ignore this symptom because neck and throat pain is common.
5. Unexplained weight loss and fatigue
Unexplained weight loss and constant fatigue may be present along with other symptoms.
Note: If you experience the above symptoms, do not try to self-diagnose and definitely consult a doctor. Only after this can the disease be confirmed.
