Kalamkaval Review: Jointly creating a buzz with its trailer, Kalamkaval has returned with Mammootty as this dark crime thriller has positioned itself in one of the major Malayalam releases of the festive season since it has been earning strong advance bookings with a small budget. But is Kalamkaval powerful enough to demand a theatre visit, or is it the kind of thriller that works better on a digital screen?

Kalamkaval unhinges in a violent underbelly where the lives of two absolutely opposing men collide. Mammootty enacts a sinister, horrible character who has a criminal past and is interlinked with a fast-rising investigator who is out to expose a larger nexus.
The story is constructed through a layered narrative-now an investigation in the present day, now an uncovering of hidden truths. Such slivers of personal loyalties, political pressures, and revenge-driven motives begin surfacing, as the hidden faces of the characters are gradually revealed by the film’s lens.
Not to be merely twisting, the suspense builds up an atmospheric, brooding tension. By the time the final confrontation comes, the film has already already ensnared the viewers in its morally gray world.

Analysis

Instantly depicting a Mammootty who could very easily switch between restraint and controlled aggression, Vinayakan would match him scene to scene, so that dynamic is definitely one of the film’s highlights.
The direction is now in the mood and the realism, imparting an usually raw and grounded tone to the thriller. The background score builds the tension without overshadowing the scenes.
Kalamkaval is no typical fast-paced commercial entertainer. The screenplay leans toward a gradual buildup even if it might feel slower for the expecting audience of continuous action. One or two emotional subplots have also inflated the runtime.
